How To Wear Slides (And Where To Get A Pair)

Ever since pool slides made a fashionable comeback in 2016, we've seen countless throwbacks and evolutions of the slip-on shoe.
And what's not to love about slides? No lacing up, buckling, strapping or zipping involved. Just one easy motion.

At the most casual end of the scale, we have the rubber pool slide (a normcore fave), followed by the humble Birktenstock, then perhaps a silky or fluffy version ala Rihanna's Fenty x Puma slides.

Wear it super casual and pair it with sportswear like Rih. Or match your slides to your dress like model Gigi Hadid for a more sophisticated look. The point is to look like you didn't try too hard.

Next up is the loafer slide, which is... yes, exactly what it sounds like. Gucci kicked off the trend way back in 2015, with its much talked about fur-lined loafer. This is the kind of high-fashion style made for those who find traditional loafers too stuffy. You wouldn't see a librarian in these.

Since then, we've seen loafer slides filter down into chain stores where they've become a chic option to wear to the office (but more on that later).

Next up is the mule, now found in countless flat and heeled varieties. Don't ask me why these shoes share a name with the animal. Maybe for their stubborn refusal to leave trend forecasts?

Wear them like you would a ballet flat – aka with pretty much anything in your wardrobe from jeans, to flouncy dresses, to culottes and more. And hey, why not try a heeled, close-toed version with your work trousers.
